Falklands Remote Radar Head (RRH) Accommodation Replacement
VolkerFitzpatrick has completed a four-year infrastructure improvement programme in the Falkland Islands on behalf of the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) and Strategic Command, delivering modern accommodation and operational facilities across three remote locations.
Purpose
- The programme was undertaken to replace accommodation dating from 1984 at Mount Kent, Mount Alice and Byron Heights with modern, high-performance facilities capable of supporting personnel stationed in some of the most remote and challenging locations within the UK Defence estate.
- Designed to withstand the harsh Falklands climate, the new facilities provide more comfortable, resilient and energy-efficient accommodation while supporting the UK’s capability to maintain a secure and sustained presence in the South Atlantic.
What we are doing
- VolkerFitzpatrick delivered new single-storey modular accommodation blocks at Mount Kent, Mount Alice and Byron Heights, each designed to accommodate up to 12 people.
- The facilities include private bedrooms, office and operational workspaces, catering and welfare areas, leisure facilities, plant and utility rooms, and temporary transit accommodation. Delivery required careful planning to overcome extreme weather, restricted access and a complex logistics chain of almost 8,000 miles.
Project Successes
- The successful completion and handover of the accommodation at Byron Heights marked the final phase of the four-year programme. Lessons learned from the first delivery at Mount Kent were applied to the more remote Mount Alice and Byron Heights sites, supporting delivery across increasingly challenging locations.
- The completed facilities have improved working and living conditions for personnel, providing enhanced connectivity, dedicated workspaces and modern accommodation, while also offering improved energy efficiency compared with the original facilities.
