Our projects
VolkerSmart Technologies delivers complex electrical infrastructure projects across local highway authorities, National Highways, rail, aviation, flood defence, utilities, building and commercial sectors. Our expertise spans design, low and high voltage connections, civils works, power distribution, communications infrastructure and the installation and maintenance of innovative technologies that support the transition to smarter, more sustainable communities.
Delivering for local authorities and transport networks
With over 50,000 connections delivered across local authorities and transport networks over the last ten years, VolkerSmart Technologies is a trusted partner in electrical infrastructure delivery.
Working with clients including Transport for London, Camden, Havering, Barking & Dagenham, Hackney, BCP, Peterborough, Medway, Luton and Somerset Councils, we provide a comprehensive range of connection services, from unmetered and three-phase metered connections to service extensions. Our turnkey approach simplifies delivery, giving clients a single point of contact and complete confidence throughout every stage of the project.
Automated vehicle technology
The Smart Mobility Living Lab (SMLL) is an advanced, connected testbed, using public roads, in London, to develop and validate new transport technologies. The testbed is used to demonstrate performance, safety and benefits of connected and automated vehicle technology, future transport services and mobility solutions.
VolkerSmart Technologies installing metered electrical connections as well as new trench duct work as part of a pervasive monitoring solution along the test routes. Using our extensive experience as an Independent Connections Provider on civil engineering projects, we delivered electrical design and application, linking and fusing, single-phase metre supply, installation of a feeder pillar and re-instatement and trenching civils work.
Independent retail carts outside train and bus stations across London
The retail cart initiative for Transport for London allows owners to set-up outside busy London stations, with full access to power supply, offering members of the public with an easy ‘grab and go’ service.
The scheme involved the connection of electrical supply outside 18 sites in the heart of the city. The works involved creating concrete plinths, installation of feeder pillars, a single-phase metered service and private trenching, commissioning the use of electrics and installation of electric supply for a handful of commercial properties
The scheme required a high degree of expertise due to its complex nature. Our multiskilled team helped the project to overcome challenges including working with Low Voltage mains in extremely public facing sites, while still managing to hand back and commission a number of sites early, including Turnpike Lane, Stoke Newington and Stockwell stations.
M27 Junction 8 electrical connections
VolkerSmart Technologies delivered a comprehensive package of low-voltage electrical connection works along the M27 at Junction 8, supporting the successful delivery of critical highway infrastructure improvements.
The project encompassed the full design, coordination, and installation of low-voltage electrical infrastructure. A key aspect of the scheme involved close collaboration with the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) to programme and coordinate electrical connections within the constraints of planned phased traffic management arrangements, ensuring works were carried out safely and efficiently while minimising disruption to road users.
The scope of works included the design and installation of lighting and communications feeder pillars, excavation and trenching activities for cable routes and jointing locations, cable laying and termination, and the installation of associated electrical infrastructure. Our team managed all elements of the works, from detailed planning and programme management through to testing, commissioning, backfilling and reinstatement.
Richmond and Wandsworth on-street EV charging
Leveraging our extensive street lighting expertise, VolkerSmart Technologies delivered over 1,000 5Kw in-column EV chargers across the London Borough of Richmond and Wandsworth. The project was delivered as a full turnkey solution delivered in three carefully planned phases, including: site surveys to identify suitable lamp posts for installation and civils work including the installation of earth mats. The team also delivered all electrical conversions to retrofit the lamp posts with EV charging capabilities and commissioned the chargers.
With installations spanning 377 residential roads across Richmond and Wandsworth, minimising disruption was a critical challenge. VolkerSmart Technologies achieved this through effective coordination of permitting processes, issuing clear public and planning notices and proactively engaging with local residents to ensure smooth delivery.
In addition to the installation, VolkerSmart Technologies is committed to the ongoing maintenance of the infrastructure. This includes routine six-monthly testing to ensure equipment is working effectively and reactive and emergency maintenance, with a commitment to responding to emergency callouts within two hours.
Flat and flush EV charging in Barnet
VolkerSmart Technologies delivered over 1,000 on-street charging points across almost 100 roads in Barnet. The scheme involved the installation of uniquely engineered charge points which are flat and flush, sitting within the footway on residential streets.
The team were responsible for all permitting and parking bay suspensions, initial site surveys, provision of utility drawings, trial holes, installation of feeder pillars, trenching, ducting, cabling and reinstatement, installation of the charging points and testing. The team also completed all electrical connections to the Distribution Network Operator and early contractor involvement in re-positioning feeder cabinets to improve the point of connection and to fully utilise the road space. All traffic management was delivered by VolkerTraffic Management, minimising disruptions and optimising efficiencies.
