VolkerHighways takes community action with its own Big Clean Up Week

21st - 26th September marked VolkerHighways’ very own Big Clean Up Week Competition, coinciding with the Great British Beach Clean.

Big clean up week

Throughout the week, teams from across Bath and North East Somerset (BaNES), West Sussex, Hertfordshire, Medway and Wokingham came together to make a positive impact in their community and enhance their local environments.

In West Sussex, colleagues from VolkerHighways, VolkerTraffic Management and the West Sussex County Council headed down to Selsey Beach, where they collected two big bags of litter.

Our BaNES team used the week to roll up their sleeves to clear an overgrown area and remove an old polytunnel frame at Connections Day Centre. Connections Day Centre provides essential support to adults with learning disabilities. This project forms part of an ongoing partnership with the centre where the team created an accessible sensory garden earlier this year.

Meanwhile, in Welwyn Garden City, the team helped restore the sensory garden at Peartree Short Break Centre by clearing overgrown vegetation across four days. Peartree Short Break Centre, part of Jubilee House Care Trust, is a residential respite care facility supporting children and young people aged 5 to 18 with learning and physical disabilities.

A special thank you to AMA Waste for donating the skip, Lee Brothers for supplying gloves and safety glasses, and Dan and Ollie from VolkerHighways’ Luton team for helping to remove the vegetation and dispose of a truck load of green waste.

In Medway, our team partnered with Medway Norse, Country Style Recycling, the Waste Services team and Medway Council to carry out a community litter pick around Weedswood Estate, Chatham. Together, the team collected 35 bags of rubbish, weighing an impressive 210kg!

Our Wokingham team joined forces with subcontractors to pick litter around their depot, local housing estates, Observer Way Road, Bulmershe playfields, and several road closure sites.

Alongside getting out and about in the local area, teams also made eco-pledges that will serve as their sustainability commitments for the year ahead.

“A huge thank you to everyone who got involved in our Big Clean Up Week. Together, we've shown that even the smallest actions can have a meaningful impact on our environment and communities.”
