At VolkerStevin, we're delivering some of the UK's most complex and high-profile infrastructure projects, and we're looking for an exceptional Senior Health, Safety & Fire Lead to join our team.
This is not just another safety role. This is an opportunity to take strategic ownership of health, safety and fire performance across a major long-term framework, influencing projects that are critical to the UK's infrastructure and defence sectors.
Working across our operations in Helensburgh and Glasgow City Centre, you'll be the driving force behind our health and safety strategy, leading teams, influencing senior stakeholders, and embedding a culture where everyone goes home safe every day.
The Opportunity
As our Senior Health, Safety & Fire Lead, you will provide strategic leadership and operational oversight across a diverse portfolio of civil engineering, infrastructure and marine projects.
You'll work closely with project leadership teams, client representatives and framework partners to drive continual improvement, champion best practice, and lead the development of our behavioural safety programme, Safety Ripple.
This is a highly visible role with the opportunity to influence decision-making at the highest levels of the organisation and leave a lasting legacy on one of our flagship frameworks.
Strategic Leadership
- Develop and deliver the Health & Safety strategy across the framework.
- Drive a consistent and high-performing safety culture across multiple projects and workstreams.
- Collaborate with clients and framework partners to promote shared learning and continuous improvement.
- Translate strategic objectives into practical action plans that deliver measurable results.
Leading People & Performance
- Lead, mentor and inspire a team of Health & Safety professionals.
- Ensure projects are supported by competent and effective H&S resources.
- Support recruitment, talent development and succession planning within the safety function.
- Foster collaboration and knowledge-sharing across teams and projects.
Health, Safety & Fire Governance
- Provide expert advice to project teams operating in highly regulated environments.
- Ensure compliance with legislation, industry standards, client requirements and the VolkerStevin Integrated Management System.
- Monitor regulatory developments and drive best-practice implementation across the framework.
Driving Safety Culture
- Lead the rollout and evolution of our behavioural safety programme, Safety Ripple.
- Enable project teams with the tools, training and support needed to embed positive safety behaviours.
- Inspire a proactive approach to health, safety and wellbeing across all levels of the workforce.
Assurance & Continuous Improvement
- Oversee inspections, audits and assurance activities across the framework.
- Lead investigations and ensure meaningful learning from incidents and near misses.
- Analyse trends, identify opportunities and drive performance improvements.
- Champion innovation and best practice across projects.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Build strong relationships with clients, regulators and framework partners.
- Represent VolkerStevin at client forums, leadership meetings and industry working groups.
- Deliver insightful performance reporting and strategic recommendations to senior leadership.
About you
- NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety Management.
- CMIOSH or FIOSH membership.
- Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice.
- ISO 45001 Lead Auditor qualification.
- Significant experience within construction, civil engineering, infrastructure, marine or defence environments.
- Demonstrated success leading H&S across multiple projects or major programmes of work.
- Strong understanding of working within highly regulated sectors.
