Siemens Wind Turbine Blade Factory

VolkerFitzpatrick has delivered three major wind turbine blade factory projects for Siemens Gamesa at its manufacturing hub in Hull, creating a programme of works worth approximately £100 million. The facilities support the production of next-generation offshore wind turbine blades and play a key role in one of the UK's most significant renewable energy manufacturing hubs

Project Overview

VolkerFitzpatrick has delivered three major wind turbine blade factory projects for Siemens Gamesa at its manufacturing hub in Hull. Building on the successful delivery of the original blade factory in 2016, VolkerFitzpatrick was subsequently appointed to deliver two additional blade manufacturing facilities and repurpose the existing factory, creating a programme of works worth approximately £100 million. These facilities support the production of some of the world's largest offshore wind turbine blades and contribute to the continued growth of the UK's renewable energy sector.

Complex design and construction

The facilities were designed and constructed to accommodate highly specialised manufacturing processes associated with offshore wind turbine blade production. Large-span steel structures, extensive internal production space and complex building services were incorporated to provide the environment required for efficient blade manufacture, assembly and finishing. The buildings also include office accommodation, welfare facilities and the supporting infrastructure necessary for large-scale industrial operations.

The programme involved the delivery of piled foundations, drainage, structural steelwork and building envelopes, together with specialist mechanical and electrical installations. These systems included power, lighting, ventilation, cooling and humidity control, all tailored to the requirements of the manufacturing process. The later phases also included significant alterations to the existing blade factory, enabling Siemens Gamesa to adapt its operations for larger turbine blades and future production requirements.

Supporting renewable energy manufacturing

The Hull facilities represent a significant investment in UK renewable energy manufacturing capability. Through the successful delivery of three blade factory projects on the site, VolkerFitzpatrick has helped establish one of the country's key offshore wind manufacturing hubs while demonstrating its expertise in delivering complex industrial facilities for leading international manufacturers.

Social value

Throughout the programme, VolkerFitzpatrick worked closely with the local community, creating opportunities for local employment, skills development and regional supply chain partners. Measures were also implemented to maximise the reuse of materials and minimise waste, supporting the project's wider sustainability objectives.
