M3 Junction 9
VolkerFitzpatrick is delivering major improvements to M3 Junction 9 near Winchester for National Highways, helping to improve journeys and connectivity between the M3 and A34 while providing better routes for walkers, cyclists and horse riders.
Purpose
- The scheme will improve the busy M3 Junction 9, which has regularly experienced congestion for traffic travelling between the M3 and A34. The improvements are designed to reduce congestion and strengthen connections between the south coast, the Midlands and London.
- The project will also improve active travel provision, with new and upgraded routes for walkers, cyclists and horse riders.
What we are doing
- VolkerFitzpatrick is widening the junction and constructing two new bridges to create a new gyratory, allowing the M3 to increase from three lanes to four as it passes beneath the junction.
- The works also include extending the southbound slip road, upgrading signs and gantries and creating free-flowing links between the M3 and A34 in both directions. The scheme includes 2.8km of new cycling and walking provision, four subways, a toucan crossing and 1.7km of bridleway.
Project successes
- The project has been developed through years of engagement with local communities and key stakeholders to establish the best solution for the junction. Alongside improving road connectivity, the scheme will deliver enhanced infrastructure for active travel while supporting safer and more efficient journeys through this important strategic connection.
