Our community

Making a positive impact is at the core of our People, Planet, Purpose commitment. We believe our role extends beyond maintaining highways, creating opportunities to support people, protect the environment and strengthen the communities we serve.

Together with Luton Council, we work collaboratively to deliver social value and sustainability enhancements through local initiatives, community partnerships and volunteering. By investing in people and places, we help create thriving communities and lasting benefits for future generations.

In 2026, we proudly received a Gold International CSR Award from The Green Organisation for supporting Luton Foodbank, Luton BESP careers events, transforming the playground at Little People’s Nursery and prioritising job opportunities for those most at risk of unemployment.

Open Doors

Step into Highways

On our Butterfield Park & Ride scheme in Luton, we welcomed female Engineering students in Years 9,10 and 11 from Chiltern Academy and Science students in Year 10 from Bedfordshire Academy.

Led by our all‑female management team, we introduced the students to our organisation, the variety of roles available within the industry, and the team’s own career journeys into construction and where they are today. We also highlighted the apprenticeship opportunities available across our business.

During one of the events, Cllr Javed Hussain, Executive Member for Highways and Sustainable Transport, spoke about the importance of projects like Butterfield and shared reflections on his own engineering background.

In addition, this summer, our team supported nine Year 10 students through work experience placements, providing a total of 270 hours of hands-on learning and career insight.

Chiltern Academy STEM Racing

Our team proudly served as the headline sponsor for Chiltern Academy's engineering students at the recent STEM Racing event.

STEM Racing challenges students aged 11-19 to 'think bigger, work smarter, and push their ideas further - preparing them for real-world STEM careers and global recognition.'

Chiltern Academy delivered an outstanding performance, with their car finishing just 0.008 seconds shy of the fastest time in the competition. The team also earned a nomination for the Research and Development Award, highlighting their impressive innovation and dedication.

HVO

Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO)

In 2025, our Luton contract swapped to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuel for our fleet, contributing significantly to our carbon reduction performance. Thanks to these efforts, across all our contracts, we procured just under 130,000 litres of HVO across our contracts, achieving up to a 90% reduction in fuel-related emissions compared with traditional diesel.
