Highway and street lighting term maintenance
VolkerHighways is working on a ten-year highway and street lighting maintenance contracts with Bath and North East Somerset, after achieving its full contract extensions.
What we do
As part of the contract, we deliver all aspects of highway and street lighting maintenance covering Bath and North East Somerset Council’s 1,078km of adopted highway which includes both rural and urban environments. We provide a broad range of both planned and reactive services, including but not limited to:
- Emergency response
- Winter precautionary and reactive salting and snow clearance
- Cyclical gully emptying
- Maintenance of drainage systems
- Road and footway resurfacing
- Reactive maintenance of all asset types including carriageway repairs, footway maintenance, signing and safety fencing
- Civil engineering projects
- Maintenance of bridges and structures
- Street lighting and electrical maintenance
We are responsible for the maintenance of over 20,000 road gullies, 886km of footways and 16,942 street lighting assets. We undertake a range of highway improvement schemes, including active travel schemes and bespoke projects to improve and enhance the local infrastructure.

Step into Highways
Our Step into Highways programme is designed to provide individuals with a practical and engaging introduction to the highways industry. Working alongside the Youth Guarantee Project, Bath and North East Somerset’s local Department for Work & Pensions, the council’s care leavers team and other institutions, we regularly host three-hour sessions designed to connect with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and offer a real-life insight into our business and the wider construction industry. The individuals get an insight into roles available, career pathways, practical advice including CV writing tips and mock interview practice to help prepare them for future opportunities, as well as a depot tour.
Big Clean Up Week
September marked VolkerHighways’ Big Clean Up Week to make a positive impact in the community and enhance local environments. Our team rolled up their sleeves to carry out an entire week of ‘make a difference’ volunteering activities at Connections Day Centre, providing essential support to adults with learning disabilities. The project, to clear overgrown areas and remove an old polytunnel frame, formed part of an ongoing partnership with the centre where the team created an accessible sensory garden earlier this year.
Road Safety Roadshow
Our team has an ongoing Road Safety partnership with Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Road Safety team to educate children aged 4-11 with assemblies focusing on key road safety messages, including the Green Cross Code, temporary road works and cycle safety education.
This face-to-face engagement allows children to participate, ask questions, share ideas and have the opportunity to meet our amazing mascots Kerby and Amber, making the experience more impactful and memorable.
Virtual cycle ride for Cancer Research
In collaboration with Bath & North East Somerset Council and our subcontractors, we took on a mammoth virtual Pedal for a Purpose cycle ride. Covering an incredible 536 miles in just one day, the virtual journey passed by all of our highway maintenance contracts, stopping at head office in Hoddesdon, and even made a quick overseas detour to visit our parent company in the Netherlands. The initiative raised over £2,000 for Cancer Research.
Award-winning delivery
We are proud to have received recognition through a number of prestigious industry award programmes, reflecting our dedication and commitment to making a difference across Bath & North East Somerset.
Our achievements include a Gold Green Apple Award and a Highly Commended accolade at the CIHT Sustainability Awards for our collaborative low-carbon depot. We have also celebrated individual success, with Matt Barnes, Supervisor, being named a Rising Star at the CCS Gala Awards in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the industry. In addition, our sites have earned multiple Bronze CCS Site Awards, demonstrating consistently high standards across our operations. While our wider commitment to social value and responsible business practices has been recognised with a prestigious Gold International CSR Award.
