Bath and North East Somerset Council
Highway and street lighting term maintenance
VolkerHighways is working on a ten-year highway and street lighting maintenance contracts with Bath and North East Somerset, having received an extension in 2024.
What we do
As part of the contract, we deliver all aspects of highway and street lighting maintenance covering 1,102km of highway along A roads, B roads and rural and urban roads. We provide planned and reactive maintenance, footway improvements, bridge and street lighting maintenance.
Our works are varied and include drainage maintenance and repairs, winter maintenance, pothole and patching works and a full emergency response service.
We maintain 18,000 lighting assets, 15,000 street lights and 2,500 illuminated signs and bollards.
We also undertake a range of public realm improvement schemes and bespoke projects to improve and enhance the local infrastructure.
Our community
Placing our community at the heart of our works, we prioritise the employment of local people, work with local supply chain partners and maximise our community contribution through social value activities.
Innovation
We work with our supply chain to source, trial and implement innovative solutions to improve efficiencies and reduce our carbon emissions, while maintaining quality.
Thermal road repair
As part of our commitment to help tackle the climate and ecological emergency, we invested in an ultra eco-friendly thermal road repair system. This sustainable technology makes repairs using an infra-red heating process which reheats the existing road surface, bringing it back to a workable state where it can be recycled and used again. Additional material is added, mixed in and compacted to reform the road back to a high standard.
Our 89% carbon reduced depot
We are proud to operate from an almost carbon-neutral depot. The depot benefits from:
- A 10,000 litre overnight filling facility supporting our gully cleansing service
- LED lighting and passive infra-red lighting activation
- An efficient heating and cooling system, with timer controls, has been integrated into the building. This replaces the air in each room every 12 minutes, while retaining up to 70 per cent of the building’s heat
- Solar panels with battery storage across, providing a reduction in CO2 emissions of up to 12.6t per annum, along with an energy management system, managing the energy load across the depot and diverting energy to the areas which need it most
Industry recognition
We take pride in being recognised for our success through industry awards. In Bath and North East Somerset, we have celebrated our commitment to improving the natural environmental through an International Gold Green Apple Award by the Green Organisation.
Our collaborative partnership with Bath and North East Somerset Council has been verified through BSI ISO 44001 Collaborative Business Relationship standard, which was achieved in 2023.
"VolkerHighways will be using the latest technologies to repair road surfaces and will be using operating systems that provide real-time information on repairs for greater efficiency. VolkerHighways shares the same values and vision as Bath and North East Somerset Council and I welcome this new contract."
