VolkerFitzpatrick recently welcomed a group of young people from Luton to a site visit as part of the Prince's Trust ‘Get Into Construction’ programme. The programme offers young people aged 18-25 that are seeking employment a valuable insight into the construction industry, helping to equip them with the tools they will need to succeed in the work environment.
As part of VolkerFitzpatrick’s ongoing commitment to supporting the community, the Luton M1 Junction 10A Improvement project team hosted 15 of the programme’s participants. The day started with a classroom based workshop, where students learned about VolkerFitzpatrick and the VolkerWessels UK group, the Luton project and our wider work in the Luton area. The session moved on to careers in the construction industry, which included discussions on career paths, understanding the job market and interview techniques. This workshop introduced the group to the wide range of career options in construction, including many they were unfamiliar with such as planning and Health & Safety, Quality and Environment roles.
Following the presentation the group was escorted onto the live site to witness some of the work that they had learned about.
Richard Robinson, project manager commented: “VolkerFitzpatrick is delighted to work with the Prince's Trust, supporting young people in Luton to realise their potential and achieve their ambitions. Prior to the site visit the young people thought jobs in construction and engineering were just about digging holes, and laying bricks. This visit has opened their eyes to possibilities they didn't know existed, and inspired them to consider construction and engineering careers.”
Matthew Weatherby, Prince's Trust programme executive for ‘Get Into’ said: “A big thank you to VolkerFitzpatrick. The session was great; it was thought provoking and informative, really gave the group something to think about and they were all really inspired.”
