Our entrepreneurial heritage

VolkerWessels UK brings together five individual business units, each with a long and successful entrepreneurial heritage within their specialist markets.

With an objective to provide clients with access to a range of technical and operational expertise across the construction industry, our business units can trace their origins back to the early 1900s. Through their hard work and dedication, they have built excellent reputations within their markets for delivering innovative projects for a wide range of clients.

Civil engineering company Fitzpatrick & Son was founded in 1921 by dynamic self-starter, John Fitzpatrick. His son, Patrick put the business on the map with several high profile projects in London. Read VolkerFitzpatrick’s story here.

VolkerRail’s story begins on 2 August 1935, when John Spafford and Ellis Berman launched a new construction firm Bowins & Spafford. Read VolkerRail’s story here.

Founded in 1934, Harbour & General Works Ltd mainly undertook marine works. Over 80 years later, VolkerStevin operates in a wide variety of sectors, with its specialist divisions VolkerInfra, VolkerBrooks and VolkerGround Engineering. Read VolkerStevin’s story here.

VolkerLaser was originally part of the Worcestershire based Laser Civil Engineering Ltd. Since forming in 1994 under its current managing director, Mike Weaver, the business unit has gone from strength to strength. Learn more about VolkerLaser here.
