A five year highways term contract initially running until 2011 with a 5 years extension granted taking the contract to 2016.
A separate contract for street lighting maintenance and capital works across the area is run concurrently.
The operational area is substantially rural but includes Newbury at its centre with Thatcham to the East, Hungerford to the West, Isley to the North and the Hampshire border to the South. The county has many narrow rural roads set within rolling hills and countryside making access a problem during winter weather.
As well as routine and responsive highway works, the contract also includes high value improvement works that include carriageway surfacing, drainage, footway construction, micro asphalting and bridge maintenance.
Combining directly employed labour and specialist supply chain partners, the highways contract includes emergency response, gulley works, pothole permanent repairs, traffic management and winter maintenance. Our in house gangs also carry out inspections in rural areas to identify and undertake a wide range of customer focused minor works.
Dave Easton, VolkerHighways project manager for the West Berkshire contract, said: "The West Berkshire client team is very supportive and open to any new ideas and innovations that we bring to the contract. The joint aim is to make the contract more efficient and improve customer satisfaction and service delivery. Together we have a partnership that is built on mutual trust and the excellent culture fit of the two organisations.
"Over the last few years, we have developed a flexible, hands-on approach to the contract, where we can call on extra resources, as necessary, to accommodate the client's needs, and to meet their fluctuating work-load and corporate direction."
Nick Dale, project engineer of West Berkshire Council commented on the contract: "David Easton and his VolkerHighways team have delivered a challenging large scale project, the likes of which we haven’t seen before in West Berkshire, on time, on budget, and in an absolutely professional manner. It has been a pleasure to work with VolkerHighways and I couldn’t recommend them highly enough.”
