Siemens wind turbine blade factory, Hull

VolkerFitzpatrick was selected to deliver a new offshore wind turbine blade factory in Hull for Siemens in July 2015.

The single stage design and build project involves creating a new 430,000ft2 state-of-the-art industrial facility for manufacturing and servicing 75m long turbine blades. The project also involves the construction of new offices and welfare facilities.

The new factory is the centrepiece of a £500m investment into improving Green Port Hull and will deliver 1,000 new long-terms jobs and a further 500 during construction.

VolkerFitzpatrick will maximise local labour by achieving targets for employing 40% of their workforce from residents within 50 miles of site and at least 25% within 20 miles.

A critical element of the project is to allow Siemens early access for manufacturing blades to meet secured orders. The VolkerFitzpatrick construction strategy has been carefully coordinated to accommodate this whilst maintaining overall construction efficiency.

The substructure will use 4,650 driven precast concrete piles and in-situ pile caps. The superstructure is steel frame with steel roof trusses to accommodate the large postal spans. The envelope is a combination of precast concrete panels up to 2.4m for low level protection and Eurobond composite cladding to roof level.

The project is VolkerFitzpatrick’s first contract with Siemens in the renewable energy sector and is due for completion in autumn 2016.
