Reconstruction of Berths 201/202, Southampton

VolkerStevin was the main contractor for the £35M contract to reconstruct and deepen Berths 201/202 in Southampton. The recently completed project involved the design and construction of a new 550m quay wall directly in front of the existing Berths 201/202. Our Client, ABP required these berths to be deepened to allow current and new generation container ships to berth there at their loaded draught.
Scope of works:
- To reconstruct the berth quay wall utilising an anchored pile wall option to cater for the new berth depth
- To upgrade the existing Quay electrical infrastructure and service facilities to current H&S standards and BS/Euro Codes
- To upgrade the existing crane and crane rail facilities to accommodate new and larger cranes to offload the bigger vessels
- To dredge the deeper berthing pocket using backhoe techniques and provide specialist designed scour protection
- To undertake all temporary works, site preparation, clearance, demolition, decommissioning, piling, earthworks, cathodic protection and fittings such as fenders, kerbs, bollards, ladders, safety chains, rails, buffers and signage
Following successful completion of the new 550 metre berth at Southampton, it is now capable of handling the world's largest container ships and offering:
- 1.87km of deep water quay, with up to 16 metres depth alongside.
- Berthing for vessels over 400 metres in length.
- 16 quayside gantry cranes with super post panamax capacity.
- All backed up by a fleet of flexible straddle carriers.
