Peterborough

VolkerRail has completed the renewals of the lineside equipment including multicore lineside cables, signals, and location cases at Peterborough to extend the life of the signalling system by 15 years.

This project was undertaken to maintain the integrity of the signalling system by renewing the life expired signalling infrastructure to current requirements, with the abolition of redundant routes and equipment where possible.

The works, spanning over 13 miles of track, included the renewal of 650v lineside distribution system, location case renewals, signal renewals with LED heads and all lineside multi core and tail cables. Each stage of planning was extremely complex due to the nature of the working area which has 10 running lines including the East Coast Mainline.

Successful completion of this project required daily communications and close collaboration with Network Rail's planning teams to ensure lineside access was provided for all of the 25 stages, and that no conflicts arose from other worksites as possessions were often required on all running lines including the East Coast Main Lines.
