Oxfordshire LED upgrade and maintenance

Oxfordshire

VolkerHighways is working on a five-year Highways Electrical Assets contract, on behalf of Oxfordshire County Council.

The project will see VolkerHighways carry out planned and responsive maintenance to streetlights, illuminated signs, bollards and other lighting equipment, across the county. In addition, the business will upgrade much of its existing lighting with LED lighting.

This contract expands VolkerHighways’ presence in Oxfordshire, following the award of both VolkerSmart Technologies’ ‘Park and Charge’ electric vehicle (EV) charge point installation contract, by EZ-Charge, in late 2021, and its successful delivery of fourteen EV charge points, as part of Oxford City Council and the University of Oxford’s ‘Go Ultra Low Oxford’ project.

  • Maintenance of approximately 60,000 streetlights and over 6,000 illuminated signs, bollards and other lighting equipment
  • Upgrade of 35,000 units with LED lighting, to increase the council’s energy efficiency
  • Replacement of aged lighting columns
  • Planned and responsive maintenance inspections, testing and repair works
  • Services provided to Oxfordshire County Council, Cherwell District Council and Parish and Town Councils

"The County Council is looking forward to working with VolkerHighways, to deliver the maintenance and upgrade of our street lighting assets within Oxfordshire. These are exciting times, as we change the existing assets to LED units, saving the authority 15,000,000kWh of energy and delivering a reduction of 2,600 tonnes of CO2."

Councillor Tim Bearder, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways Management
