North Yorkshire Moor bridge renewals work

North Yorkshire Moor

VolkerRail's plant division were employed by the North Yorkshire Moors Railway to help with a bridge lift and replacement.

Bridge 30 which is located a quarter mile North of Goathland, was 145 years old, mostly built from cast iron and in need of replacement. Because the bridge had an 80ft span and was in a remote location, the replacement had to be completed as one major renewal.

North Yorkshire Moors Railway enlisted our Kirow 1200 crane to remove and replace the existing bridge, however because of the location of the bridge and the size of the Kirow crane a temporary line had to be built for access, by the North Yorkshire Moor Railway staff and volunteers.

Severe snow effected the lift meaning that safe access was unavailable for the customer's other contractors. However, we still used the Kirow to prepare items for the main activities.

Aftern the servere weather conditions improved the crane was able to remove the outer and central girders of the old bridge. New steelwork elements were installed and the crane was then used to lift the new beams into place which measured 28 metres long, 2.55 metres wide and 1.75 metres high.

Careful planning, thorough preparation and skilled operation of the Kirow crane meant that the lifts were finished with ease. Bridge 30 is now ready to deliver another 145 years of service.
