Medway Council


VolkerHighways has a long-standing relationship with Medway Council, having worked with them for 11 years to date. The business’ current highways infrastructure contract began in August 2017 and comprises:

  • Planned and responsive maintenance
  • Carriageway and footway resurfacing
  • Winter maintenance
  • Drainage cleansing
  • Road markings
  • Street lighting
  • Capital schemes to improve the existing network
  • Regular maintenance and inspections of the Medway Tunnel


Strood town centre improvements, including:

  • Resurfacing Tolgate Lane and Commercial Road car park
  • Installing new seating and plants
  • Remodelling roads and junctions
  • Installing new and refurbished bus stops
  • Improving lighting
  • Resurfacing sections of the High Street with new granite paving


Other key information:

  • Approx. 650,000m2 of carriageway and 145,000m2 of footway resurfaced since 2007
  • Approx. 9,000 emergency response incidents completed since 2007
  • Key sponsor of KM Charity Team’s ‘Walk to School’ campaign
  • Winner of 2018 Bronze Considerate Constructors Scheme National Site Award
