London Borough of Hackney

London, Hackney

For the second term in a row, VolkerHighways has won the four year Streetscene Contract for the London Borough of Hackney.  This builds upon the success of the previous four years in which we carried out civil engineering, street lighting, road surfacing, special surfacing and road marking within the borough.

VolkerHighways has been renewing and maintaining the highways and footpaths in Hackney since 2004, becoming an active part of the community in which its operatives work every day.

The work includes footway and cycleway renewal and maintenance, winter maintenance, cyclic gully cleansing and maintenance, road surfacing and street lighting as well as 24/7 emergency response.

Mark Mascar, project manager for the Hackney contract, said: "Our focus in Hackney is to continue to deliver high quality services to the local community and our client, whilst developing new technology and ways of working to reduce both cost and CO2 emissions.

"These contracts can only be successful through the partnership and collaboration of the team with the client, the supply chain and the local community. We are making a number of changes to the way we work in our next term these include a new office which will locate ourselves and a key supplier in the same building in the heart of the borough and the introduction of a new Work Order Management system using bespoke handheld technology."

Councillor Feryal Demirci, cabinet member for Neighbourhoods at Hackney Council, said; "The Council is committed to creating and maintaining roads and footpaths that everyone who lives in, works in, visits or travels through Hackney can benefit from and be proud of. The services carried out by VolkerHighways are an integral part of the on-going public realm improvements across the borough, and we are pleased to continue our partnership work making Hackney a safer place for all road users."

As part of the Term Maintenance Contract in Hackney, VolkerHighways has introduced a safety campaign called Protect our People, which involves an awareness campaign for road/footpath users, as well as consultation with community groups such as Disability Hackney and the London Cycling Campaign to improve roadwork navigation for different user groups.

VolkerHighways was awarded Gold National Site Award for this contract in the Considerate Constructors Scheme in 2011. The Scheme recognises contractors who preform beyond compliance by being considerate, environmentally conscious, clean, good neighbours, respectful, safe, responsible and accountable.
