Hoe Valley Regeneration

Woking

This scheme for Thameswey Development Ltd and their flood defence partner, the Environment Agency, was to significantly reduce the flood risk along 4km of the Hoe Stream, provide state-of-the-art community facilities and extensive public open space and new wildlife habitats.

VolkerFitzpatrick's Civils and Building divisions, working collaboratively,  were appointed as Principal Contractor for this two stage design and build project as part of the IESE framework.

Our civils division undertook the major flood defence works at the Hoe Valley which consisted of 4,000m hard and soft flood defences to protect more than 200 homes, two replacement bridges and an additional bridge at the new community centre, upgrading of an existing car park and bus park, and remediation of a new residential site for 150 homes.  VolkerFitzpatrick remediated 220,000T of contaminated soil for reuse on site. The new residential site had in prior years been used as a council tip.

Our building division undertook the design and construction of a new state of the art community centre to provide a permanent home for nine local community groups, including the 7th Woking Scouts, Air Training Corp and Army Cadet Force, District Scouts and Resource Centre, Girl Guides, Sea Rangers, Westfield Football Club and Woking Boxing Club.  The team demolished the existing building and relocated the existing football pitch as well as delivering the associated external hard and soft landscaping.  Since completion the building has undergone a BREEAM assessment and been certified as `Very Good'.

A programme of habitat reinstatement was also completed to encourage wildlife through the planting of nearly 1,000 saplings, and the creation of ponds, meadowlands, bat boxes and habitats for Water Voles and Greater Crested Newts.

The Hoe Valley project has scored exceptionally well under the CEEQUAL assessment scheme and received an "Excellent Whole Project Award" with a score of 90.8%.
