Hackney Welfare Art

London, Hackney

VolkerHighways is always aware that we are guests in the resident's environment, so it is important for us to do what we can to minimise the impact of our works on the community.

In an effort to brighten our worksites in the London Borough of Hackney, VolkerHighways held a children's art competition at London Fields on November 12th, 2011. Joined by the London Borough of Hackney's Road Safety Officer, Sandra Agibiaka, and local graffiti artist, Jay Palmer, we inspired the local children to create a design for welfare units in the borough with a ‘London' theme.

Dequane Wilson Braithwaite's creation was chosen as the winning design. Along with his mother, we surprised him at his school to congratulate him and presented him with a framed copy of his design.

The next step was to bring his design to life; we commissioned Jay Palmer to spray an interpretation of the design on one of our subcontractors, AJ O'Connor's, welfare units. With Jay's help, Dequane was able to paint the first section of the design.

VolkerHighways plans to brighten up other welfare units throughout the borough in the future.
