Dover Western Docks Revival

VSBW, a joint venture between VolkerStevin and Boskalis Westminster, is responsible for the delivery of the marine structures and bridge contract for the Port of Dover’s flagship Dover Western Docks Revival (DWDR) stage 1 and 2. This is one of the largest port development projects to be constructed in the UK.

With a total contract value of £115m (VolkerStevin - £94m), the initial construction phase will include the design and build of two new berths including quay walls and land reclamation, a new marina pier, the marina curve, Wellington Cut navigation channel and new lock gates, Bascule Bridge and capital dredging work.

DWDR represents the next exciting evolution of the Port, delivering long-term capacity for a key international gateway handling trade to the value of £119bn representing up to 17% of UK trade in goods.

DWDR is the single biggest investment ever undertaken by the Port of Dover with c.£250m committed for its delivery. With UK Government planning approval and supported by a mix of private finance and European Union grant funding, DWDR will deliver: relocation and further development of the cargo business with a new cargo terminal and distribution centre; creation of greater space within the Eastern Docks for ferry traffic; a transformed waterfront to ultimately attract a host of shops, bars, cafes and restaurants with Dover's unique backdrop of the harbour, cliffs and castle; and much needed quality employment opportunities for local people.

The revival of the western part of the Port estate also supports the developing destination agenda for Dover, being identified as the key catalyst for the wider regeneration of the area.  For the latest DWDR animations, illustrations and project plans visit www.doverport.co.uk/DWDR.

A major part of the work has been around supporting the Port with its work in the local community. The project has employed in excess of 25% of the workforce from within a 25-mile radius and has contributed £39.2m to the East Kent economy through a policy to source labour and materials locally.

In addition, the project teams have been heavily involved throughout the year in a number of local charity and social events, including sponsoring the annual music festival held in the summer and sponsoring the ice rink over the Christmas period as well as holding charity golf events. The team has also been supporting a number of local school STEM events promoting the industry for the future, and raising funds by building, decorating and selling bird boxes made from recycled wood.

VolkerStevin is carrying out the following works on-site:

• Marine civils works, including the construction of 2.3km of combi pile quay walls incorporating associated concrete capping beam, cathodic protection, quay    furniture and fendering systems
• 25,000m2 of concrete apron
• 550m long new marina pier and bastion structure defining the new marina
• 120m long x 20m wide x 18m deep navigation cut
• Associated drainage and service diversions including the rerouting of fibre optic services associated with P&O Ferries
• 1 pair of 50t steel sector gates to control water levels between Dover harbour and Wellington dock
• 1 x 120t steel bascule bridge over Wellington dock
• Dredging works to remove 1 million m3 of silt and overburden underneath reclamation areas and within vehicle manoeuvring areas
• Importation of 950,000m3 of hydraulically placed reclamation fill to form land behind quay walls to provide a development platform
• Creation of 250m Berths A; designed primarily for reefer vessels and 300m Berth C; designed primarily for container and cruise vessels
