The £15m scheme was undertaken along a 1.7km stretch of the River Don corridor between Templeborough and Rotherham town centre in South Yorkshire as the first phase of a community-wide scheme.

Works included the provision of hard flood defences, new flood compensation capacity on a former derelict piece of industrial land, removal of existing redundant facilities on site and construction of a new urban wetland park providing new public access to the river.

The BURA judging panel said of the scheme: "A very impressive project involving extremely effective and sympathetic design and construction. This is a great scheme with clear support from the pubic sector, local council, Yorkshire Forward and the Environment Agency and should act as a catalyst for further regeneration, bringing huge benefits to the town."

The Templeborough to Rotherham project is a partnership between Rotherham Council, the Environment Agency and Yorkshire Forward with European funding through Objective 1 ERDF.

The project was also commended in the Natural Environment category at the awards.

Alan Robertson, acting managing director at VolkerStevin, said: "We are pleased that the Templeborough to Rotherham Scheme has been recognised as adding value to the renaissance of our waterways in the UK. Whilst the project provides a much needed 1 in 100 year flood protection to the area which has been blighted by flood for many years, it also provides a community and education resource at a previously inaccessible part of the river."

Now in their eighth year, the Waterways Renaissance Awards aim to recognise best practice in sustainable waterway regeneration and development throughout the UK.
