New bridge complete at Brent Cross West station

Recent

A new overbridge, to provide the public with a pedestrian and cycleway crossing over the Midland Main Line, at Brent Cross West, has taken another step towards completion.

Over Saturday 31 July and Sunday 1 August, the second part of the overbridge was lifted into place. The first - eastern - half was assembled in April, before being lifted into place over the Mayday bank holiday, using a 750-tonne mobile crane. Over the last month, the process has been repeated for the western half, with the structure fabricated off-site, 150 miles away in Doncaster, before being delivered in sections to the station, and assembled in the nearby retail park.

The new overbridge is 7.5m wide and 32m long, and has been built out of steel. Once complete, the bridge will provide public access across the network for the first time, since this part of the Midland Main Line was built, 150 years ago.

Commenting, senior project manager, Gordon Hunt, said: “The completion of the new overbridge marks a major milestone for our team, which has continued to work extremely hard in the development of this new station. With the overbridge complete, our team will now focus on completing all track side works, as well as continuing to build the new station.”

The station programme is being managed by Mace, on behalf of Barnet Council, built by VolkerFitzpatrick, and designed by engineering professional services consultancy WSP, with architects Chapman Taylor.

In August, all of the remaining redundant track will be removed, and works to electrify the overhead lines will begin. Work to build the new station is also ongoing, which includes installing the drainage, reinforced concrete foundations, lift shafts, platforms, and structural steelwork.

Brent Cross West, and the associated rail infrastructure, is being delivered by Barnet Council. The new station is at the heart of the Brent Cross Cricklewood regeneration programme. It will provide a gateway to Brent Cross Town, a new neighbourhood for Barnet that will bring thousands of new homes, jobs, improved schools, leisure, retail and cultural facilities to the area.
