New apprentices help secure tomorrows legacy

We believe apprenticeships are essential to helping talented young people build their careers as well as ensuring tomorrow’s legacy.

VolkerRail currently has 14 apprentices across the business, completing specialist apprenticeship schemes in overhead line, mechanical and electrical engineering, signalling and plant and recently welcomed another four to its team.

Our new apprentices Alex Pashley, Shane Pike, Cloe Bott and Connor Walkinshaw joined VolkerRail through the recent recruitment drive and will be joining other apprentices across the industry to take part in Network Rail’s advanced apprentice scheme. They will spend the first of their three years learning at Europe’s largest engineering training facility, HMS Sultan in Gosport, Hampshire, followed by two years on the job training across many of VolkerRail’s major multi-disciplinary projects.

Before joining Network Rail’s new orange army they were welcomed to VolkerRail by its current fleet of apprentices at its overhead line electrification (OLE), plant, and signalling training centre in Doncaster, and taken through an introduction to the railway and to VolkerRail.

Commenting on her apprenticeship, Cloe said: “Joining an apprenticeship with VolkerRail is such a great opportunity to grasp with both hands if you are passionate and wanting to become an engineer on the railway. It offers a great range of life skills and opportunities alongside learning and earning. There is no limit to what you can achieve.”

Shane said: “As an older apprentice it was always in my best interests to find a company that was offering support, security and the opportunity to reach my full potential. With a passion for the rail industry it is a massive privilege to be working for such an inspiring company as VolkerRail who strive to provide professional support with the use of advanced technologies in a safe working environment.”

VolkerRail’s apprentice mentor, Andrew Fawkes said: “The railway network is vital to Britain's future success, and apprentices are vital to ensure we have the skills needed to maintain and develop the network in years to come. The training facility at Gosport is world class, it will ensure the very best engineers are developed through the training programme and it’s an excellent opportunity to work with our Network Rail partners to do this.”

Our apprenticeship scheme is one of the examples that supports VolkerWessels UK’s pledge to the 5% Club, the industry led young person’s recruitment initiative. Members of The 5% Club commit to ensuring that a minimum of 5% of their total workforce consists of apprentices, sponsored students or graduates on formal training schemes within five years.
