The awards celebrate the most inspirational projects and achievements in this part of the country, over the past year. Ely Southern Bypass, which opened to traffic in October, has been shortlisted in the ‘Community Benefit’ category, reflecting the improved transport links and reduced congestion it provides for the local area.

Ben Joyce, project manager for VolkerFitzpatrick, said: “We are proud to have delivered a scheme that has provided such benefit for local residents and visitors to Ely. Our project team also went the extra mile by engaging with local schools, colleges and residents, to ensure we gave back to the community during the construction period.”

Cllr Ian Bates, Chairman of the County Council’s Economy and Environment Committee, said: “We’re really pleased that Ely Southern Bypass has been shortlisted for a RICS Award for ‘Community Benefit’. The new road connecting the A142 at Angel Drove to Stuntney Causeway has been a much wanted scheme for more than 20 years and is a great contender.

“The road will not only solve long-standing problems and reduce journey times for drivers, but was designed and built around a national heritage site, with a new walkway for residents and visitors to admire the spectacular views of Ely Cathedral.”

Category winners will be announced at a ceremony on 15 May at Apex, Bury St Edmunds. The winners will then proceed to the RICS Awards 2019 Grand Final in London, in November.
