The contract, which is VolkerRail´s first major lead contractor works in Ireland, is an extension to the existing Luas Red Line which currently operates between Tallaght and Connolly station, Busarus and The Point.

The project comprises the construction of 1.5km of double track incorporating civils and track infrastructure works. This includes overhead conductor system (OCS), tram stop construction, junction signalling, public lighting and associated highway & earth works.

The project will involve connecting to the existing tram infrastructure installing an in-street delta junction in one of Dublin´s most heavily trafficked urban environments. The tramway passes through the financial district of Dublin.

The program of works is already underway with overall completion scheduled for April 2009.

Managing Director for VolkerRail Projects, David Moreland says, "We are extremely pleased with the award of our first contract in Dublin. It has given us a foothold in the Irish market where the business potential for infrastructure projects will be significant in the coming years."
