Enhancing Luton's highways and infrastructure

VolkerFitzpatrick and VolkerHighways are delighted to be sponsoring an elephant in Luton’s 2021 Big Trunk Trail. Both businesses have strong, long-standing relationships with the borough, delivering ongoing highway maintenance and large-scale infrastructure projects.

Luton DART

The VolkerFitzpatrick-Kier JV is currently delivering the construction of the new state-of-the-art £225 million Luton DART fast transit system.
The DART will be a double-shuttle, fully-automated people-mover (APM), linking London Luton Airport with Luton Airport Parkway railway station. Based on latest system technology and design innovation, it will be capable of operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

As part of the project’s focus on social value, the team has hosted site visits for local school pupils and also ran the ‘Luton DART Construction Skills Hub’ with Luton Council, providing over 720 local people with the skills needed to help them enter the construction industry. In addition, the project has created 500 construction jobs, 17 permanent positions and 30 apprenticeships.

Highways Maintenance

VolkerHighways has been working in Luton for over a decade and is currently delivering Luton Borough Council’s Highway Maintenance, Major Projects and Professional Services contract.

In addition to major projects and professional design services, in association with The Project Centre, the business provides highway maintenance works to carriageways, footways and street lighting, together with winter maintenance, gully cleansing and 24/7 cover for emergency repairs.

VolkerHighways’ Smart City initiative, VolkerSmart Technologies, is also delivering value in Luton, helping the borough to reduce its carbon footprint, by installing electric vehicle charging units at taxi bays on Station Road, Park Street, Cheapside and Chaud End Lane.
The team has also helped to increase efficiency for road users, by installing a series of variable message signs in and around the town centre.
