Design Manager - Rail

We are currently recruiting for a Design Manager to join our Rail Division. This fantastic opportunity offers an excellent remuneration package and the chance to work for a forward thinking, dynamic Construction business focussed on delivering diverse and challenging civil engineering projects across the UK.

The main purpose of the role is to manage the Contractor's Design team, ensuring that the client's design specifications are met. Specific responsibilities include;

  • Support projects from tender to construction in terms of detailed design solutions
  • Close liaison with the client, gaining a thorough understanding of the clients requirements whilst ensuring a cost effective build
  • Set up design management information control systems and ensure information is received to scheduled dates, ensuring 'construct-ability' whilst fulfilling/exceeding contractual obligations.
  • Direct liaison with site teams, providing expert advice and guidance on design solutions as required.

Key accountabilities:

  • To be the VFL principle point of contact for design of a particular major project or number of projects
  • To be accountable for the overall Design Management and compliance of a particular major project or number of projects
  • To oversee and supervise a number of Design Managers / Design Co-Ordinators
  • To interface directly with the employers project Engineering team.
  • To interface directly with all Design service consultants and providers
  • To support the Project Manager with managing the contract & commercial aspects relating to design for a particular project(s)
  • To develop and maintain the design programme and other design controls
  • To actively participate in all Design related aspects relating to the Business
  • To actively participate supporting the Engineering Manager in developing Design “Best Practice” Design Management development within the Business
  • To add value to the project(s) by promoting specific ‘best value’ design solutions
  • To portray a professional and responsible image of the company to the clients, their colleagues and contractors
  • To be part of the regional ‘Bid Team’ delivering value engineering options, operation delivery solutions, preliminary input and bid document information
  • To promote Design & Engineering excellence within the project team
  • To promote Health Safety and Quality to the projects and through the tender process

Required Qualifications / Expertise:

  • Extensive Experience in Rail Design Assurance and Documentation requirements
  • Knowledge of VF Design & Engineering Procedures
  • Design Management experience of at least 10 years
  • Construction experience of at least 15 years
  • Relevant Engineering Degree qualified
  • Through training and academic qualification to proceed to Engineering Manger
  • PTS
  • CSCS
