Windsor lines platform extension

Slough

This contract was part of the South East Train Lengthening Programme (SETLP). The works involved the design and construction of extended platforms at 15 stations between London Waterloo, Windsor and Eaton Riverside. This was to facilitate the operation of 10 car trains on the Windsor lines.

VolkerFitzpatrick was responsible for the design and construction of the project as well as selecting the most cost effective and appropriate platform extension solution for the stations.

A fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) platform solution was selected and designs were refined for its use on island platform locations. The use of FRP, combined with the ability to prefabricate components in kit form, enabled us to deliver the platform extensions easily and quickly. This method is also installed without the need for heavy plant and within comparatively short rail possession periods.

Work undertaken to the platforms included the installation of permanent way signalling, platform construction, lighting, retail communication, operational communication and electrical track equipment.

Restrictive access at some locations meant platforms were delivered by road rail vehicles and a crane. We worked closely with our suppliers to store materials offsite at nearby depots to allow ‘just in time’ working to take place.

Works were also executed across multiple locations simultaneously to keep the number of abnormal possessions to an absolute minimum to reduce disruption.
