The RFU Centre for Athletic Development

VolkerFitzpatrick proudly delivered RFU’s new state-of-the-art elite training centre at Pennyhill Park - official home of the England rugby team.

This single-stage Design & Build project involved a new 29,000ft2 training centre including a 3G indoor pitch, professional gymnasium, changing rooms and showers.

Built next to an existing training pitch in the grounds of the fully operational five-star Pennyhill Park Hotel, our key project challenge was to mitigate disruption and maximise safety.

As with all our projects, our approach was tailor-made. We worked with the customer to develop an effective logistic strategy prior to starting on site and on-going liaison kept everyone informed.

The construction solution used a pile foundation and steel frame superstructure and built-up roof system with over-pitch roof lights. The envelope combines traditional brickwork with contemporary Trespa panelling with feature corner windows.

The new facility is designed to remain cool without the need for a comfort cooling system.

To manage the impact on acoustics, a perforated soundproofed liner was fixed internally.

Security measures included fixed mesh screens to the undercroft areas and plant room plus roller shutters and sliding doors throughout.

The project achieved the Considerate Constructors Scheme Performance Beyond Compliance award.
