Reading Train Care Depot

Reading

This project saw the delivery of a new train care depot in Reading, Berkshire providing First Great Western with new stabling, servicing and maintenance facilities for 100 diesel multiple unit vehicles. The works also ensured additional capacity to accommodate 47 electric trains in the future.

Major construction on this project was often carried out only 3m from live rail infrastructure, carrying over 700 trains per day. Construction activities included:

 - A new train care depot measuring 210m long by 37m wide and 11.2m high

 - Depot fit out with specialist M&E systems for fuelling, CET, lighting, compressed air, oil, coolants lifting jacks and internal cranes

 - 18 depot buildings that included administration offices, train washes and plant rooms

 - 8,000m of new depot sidings to accommodate up to 147 train carriages

 - Section 278 compliant access roads and footpaths

 - Demolition of the old rail depot on completion

To deliver these works safely we implemented our ‘Incident & Injury Free’ behavioural safety programme alongside a unique ‘flywheel safety model’. Both these approaches complemented our accredited OHSAS 18001: 2007 Safety Management System and contributed to the project winning the British Construction Industry Award 2014 for Health and Safety.

Network Rail’s Project Manager, Toufic Machnouk commented: “Safety is central to everything we do at Network Rail and we absolutely do not compromise on it. That commitment was embraced by VolkerFitzpatrick at the Reading depot and is recognised by this prestigious award for health and safety. VolkerFitzpatrick’s safety performance was truly exceptional and backed up by team behaviours that reflected their exemplary industry leading attitude.”
