The works include the following key activities:

• Lower sea wall repairs
• Construction of rock revetment
• Installation of pre-cast wall units
• Repairs to the stepped revetment
• Construction of access ramps and steps
• Refurbishment of promenade and viewing platforms
• Street furniture and lighting refurbishment

The contract was awarded in December 2012 and in the initial six months of the project, we assisted the client in securing the necessary planning permissions and consents for the project to proceed. Working with our design team, we assisted with the Environmental Impact Assessment process, drawing on our experience of delivering other similar schemes to satisfy the environmental regulators of our commitment to environmental compliance and best practice.

In June 2013, we started construction. The existing sea wall is being raised by anchoring almost 1.5km of 14t precast concrete units along the length of the promenade.

To provide further protection from the impact of the sea and coastal erosion, we are placing a rock revetment along the beach in front of the sea wall. This consists of a 1m thick underlayer of 200-400kg rock followed by a 2m thick layer of 2-4t armour stone.

Due to the nature of works along the promenade, the Kirkcaldy project has generated a high amount of public interest from the local community. To efficiently manage public liaison at the site, a Public Information Centre was set up to enable the local community to meet our team and gain a greater understanding of the project. We organised public consultation events and project open days to gauge the views of the local community and form a positive relationship with them. From these meetings at ECI stage, we realised the local community were worried that the view over the wall would be obscured with the additional height of the wall. As this was realised at ECI stage, we were able amend our design and raise the whole promenade to improve visibility and to suit the local communities' preferences.

We deployed a local Public Liaison Manager, to provide the interface with local stakeholders including businesses, community groups, schools, universities and visitors throughout the duration of works.
