The Wrabness Embankment Stabilisation Project, part of the Network Rail Control Period 5 (CP5) contract, won the award by working with the RSPB to minimise the impact of the works to the wildlife in the area. Using a number of innovative techniques the team ensured that the embankment will remain protected for a further 100 years.

A 10 year plan for improving the area is also being funded by VolkerFitzpatrick and delivered by the RSPB that will help improve the biodiversity of plant and tree species in the woodland as well as installing around a dozen dams to increase winter rain water storage.

A 1.5km site access diversion was also set up to avoid any potential damage by works vehicles to the most sensitive parts of the woodland.

The award was presented at a special ceremony at the Houses of Parliament on 16 November. The Green Apple Environment Awards were started in 1984 by The Green Organisation, a non-profit group dedicated to recognising, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice around the world.
