VolkerWessels UK will be supporting the charity Mencap by taking part in its Safety Challenge. The initiative encourages further hazard, near miss and close call reporting within organisations, whilst raising crucial funds to help Mencap realise its vision.

The reporting of hazards, close calls and near misses is a proactive and proven methodology in the prevention of accidents. VolkerWessels UK already has a great deal of success in this method of safe working and it is hoped that this added incentive will provide continual improvement for the following year.

The idea is simple, each time someone completes a Hazard / Close Call / Near Miss Report (HSE-54), VolkerWessels UK will donate £1 to Mencap. £1,893 has already been donated to the charity in 2013, improving the safety of employees and helping provide all important services for those with learning disabilities.

Adrian Shah-Cundy, VolkerWessels UK head of corporate responsibility, said: "VolkerWessels UK employees and contractors can help transform the lives of people with a learning disability as part of our actions to achieve a working environment free of injury and ill-health. It's a fantastic opportunity and it helps maintain a culture which promotes active engagement in our working environment.

"We're proud to support Mencap as part of our commitments to the communities in which we work as well as supporting local and national charities."

Mencap is the leading voice of learning disability. They work in partnership with people with a learning disability, and their services support people to live life as they choose.
