VolkerWessels UK supports environmental education at local Hertfordshire school

VolkerWessels UK, have this week helped children at Puller Memorial School in Ware, Hertfordshire to get a unique experience and understanding of the environment with a visit by the education team from the world famous Eden Project.

Pupils from two classes at the school learned about where their food comes from and how nature plays its part in the things we eat, wear and how we live.

VolkerWessels UK arranged for the Eden team to provide a day of sustainability workshops as part of their Planet Mark sustainability certification. An award the company has achieved annually since 2010. The Planet Mark certification demonstrates an organisation’s commitment to reducing their carbon footprint year on year by engaging their employees and suppliers in the process. It is delivered in partnership with the Eden Project by sustainability specialists Planet First.

The workshops are curriculum-based full day programmes working with students both in and outside of the classroom to help them connect with the natural environment.

Adrian Shah-Cundy, head of corporate responsibility at VolkerWessels UK commented: “We are delighted to partner with Planet First to deliver this highly informative and fun workshop from the Eden Project to the pupils at Puller Memorial School.

“VolkerWessels UK places great importance on operating our businesses in an environmentally sustainable way and supporting sessions such as this really helps us highlight the importance of sustainability to the next generation.

"We have previously worked with Puller Memorial School and it was great to see the children understanding the sustainability message through the activities they took part in today.”

Furthermore, this opportunity taken by VolkerWessels UK has created links between businesses and schools, helping to fulfil government and OFSTED requirements and subsequently demonstrates how schools operate as part of the wider community.

Steve Malkin, CEO at Planet First, also joined the morning activities, and said, “It was enormous fun working with the children at Puller Memorial School to help them understand sustainability. It is wonderful to bring a piece of the Eden Project into schools with the help of businesses like VolkerWessels UK.

Activities like today’s workshops show that you can create really positive environmental and community initiatives as part of running a great business.”
