VolkerStevin wins priority flood scheme in south London

Recent

VolkerStevin has won a £4.8m flood alleviation scheme in Deptford, south London, which will protect more than 33,000 residential properties and a significant number of businesses from future flooding occurrences.

The project, which is considered high priority by client the Environment Agency, will improve flood protection for Deptford Creek which is affected by the tide of the River Thames with water levels varying by up to 7metres.

This vital flood protection for London involves five different wharfs all with varying existing flood protection. VolkerStevin will be replacing four of the frontages along the creek, which involves sheet piling and h-piling, constructing 300 metres of new flood walling and creating flora and fauna habitat terracing. The two other wharfs require concrete repairs.

VolkerStevin Project Manager, Roger Martin, said: "Urban flood alleviation schemes do come with their challenges not simply working in such close proximity to residential and business premises, but also lack of suitable access for machinery and our workforce. This means that detailed construction design has to become more innovative and specialised, with more temporary works required.

"This scheme also brings with it unstable existing flood protection, which will require load relieving excavations, temporary works above the flood walls rather than in the riverbed and the use of a ‘silent' piling rig which restricts noise and vibration. This is also required due to the proximity of our neighbours."

The Deptford Creek Flood Risk Management scheme is expected to take 11 months to complete. A weekly surgery is being held to ensure that any questions or concerns the local community has are being answered. These take place at site offices on Mondays between 14:00 and 16:00.
