As part of our commitment to promoting rail safety to young children, representatives from VolkerRail spent a day at Chapel Haddlesey C.E. Primary School in Selby.

Stuart Webster-Spriggs, HSQE director, Chris Leek, head of quality and environment, and Calvin Robertson, environmental advisor, visited the school on Monday 10th November to promote level crossing and overhead line safety to the schools key stage one and key stage two classes, which are made up of 4-7 and 8-11 year olds.

The team used ‘Rail Life’ to show the children what to do when in the vicinity of the railway and provided each child with a high visibility safety vest to wear on their walk to and from school, through the impending darkness of the winter months.

VolkerRail also arranged for Network Rail’s safety truck to attend, which gave the children the opportunity to learn more about electrical safety on the railway.

Rescue Day 2014

VolkerRail was asked to visit the primary school after one if its teaching assistants, Sarah Turner, attended the successful Rescue Day 2014 and watched VolkerRail take part in a live demonstration, showing the devastating impact of a level crossing vehicle accident and what is involved in rescuing those involved. The demonstration was based on a re-enactment of a level crossing incident, where a train has collided with a car towing a caravan.

Sarah Turner said: “After seeing how successful the live demonstration was I thought it would be a great idea to get VolkerRail to visit the school and promote their message further. The children really enjoyed the day and took away a lot of key safety points for them to remember the next time they’re near a live train line.”

Stuart Webster-Spriggs said: “Being able to visit local schools and promote safety is vital to help educate children on railway dangers and how to act, but also for them to take the message away and discuss with their families and friends. We all want to avoid the devastating impact that is felt by families and communities when accidents happen. VolkerRail is very pleased to have been given this opportunity and will happily replicate this very worthwhile day in other local schools.”
