VolkerLaser’s construction of the new bridge at Bathurst Basin, Bristol, has been shortlisted in the ‘Project of the Year’ category in the prestigious ICE Awards

Key component

Bathurst Basin Bridge is a key component within the West of England’s £230 million Metrobus project. The new bridge was designed to improve traffic flow for motorists and create more space for public transport, whilst also improving the environment for people who walk and cycle. The bridge, which includes a new 3.5 meter shared cycling and walking path provides the missing link between existing paths on Commercial Road and Cumberland Road.

Unobtrusive structure

The bridge was purposely designed as a simple unobtrusive structure so as to minimise the impact on the surrounding historic dockside area and adjacent Avon New Cut river. The bridge crosses the Grade II listed former lock, and also sits within the wider City Docks Conservation Area. The modest design is deliberately sympathetic to its surroundings, and does not affect any of the key panoramas, particularly southwards to the river and beyond.

Recognition

The ICE South West Civil Engineering Awards celebrate outstanding civil engineering achievement, innovation and ingenuity around the South West.

Following a site visit from the ICE next month, winners will be announced at an award ceremony held at Bristol Harbour Hotel on Thursday 5 July 2018.
