VolkerGround Engineering delivers client cost savings through engineering expertise

Recent

VolkerGround Engineering (VGE) has recently completed a £750,000 contract for Marcus Worthington Group to complete, the Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) bored piling and steel sheet piling works for 280 apartments near Newcastle’s Stephenson Quarter. Throughout the works, VGE engineered significant savings for the client.

The 50,000ft2 brownfield site is to be transformed with the erection of one seven storey and two nine-storey properties as part of the multi-million pound scheme, creating 280 apartments, split over three different blocks. The project will transform this previously underutilised brownfield site into a high quality residential scheme.

VGE created significant savings for the client on the overall cost of construction through value engineering with regards to retaining wall options - converting costly concrete bored piled walls to alternative driven steel solutions. This allowed the first block to be completed ahead of schedule and provided follow on trade subcontractors added programme advantage. This pioneering technique saved the client 12% of their budgeted development costs on their foundations solution.

The works included the completion of the main building’s foundation piles, using a CFA method and the installation of various sheet pile retained walls around the site. The development was separated into three blocks with varying piling platform levels and the CFA works were completed using the PVE55r CFA Rig drilling piles, to a maximum depth of 31.5m length, at 600mm diameter.

Brandon Ferreira director for VGE, said: “By working closely with Marcus Worthington and their engineers, we developed solutions for both steel and CFA options in order to meet the challenging site conditions and changes in platform levels. In recognition of the significant programme delivery and cost savings, Worthington have awarded VGE the piling contract for their flagship development in central Manchester. We look forward to a continued relationship with this prestigious North West based company.”

Work commenced on site at the beginning of February and completed in May 2017.
