VolkerFitzpatrick’s Intercity Express Programme (IEP) celebrated its status as a National Skills Academy for Construction with an official launch event yesterday.

The status, delivered by the Construction Industry Training Board, was conferred on VolkerFitzpatrick because of the company’s commitment to maximise skills and employment opportunities on two of its live construction projects in Stoke Gifford and Swansea.

The achievement was marked with an official event that saw representatives from Stoke Gifford Parish Council and local apprentices come together at the Bristol Rovers Memorial Stadium on Tuesday, 28th October.

The IEP is an initiative of the Department for Transport to replace the aging fleets of trains on the east coast and Great western lines. VolkerFitzpatrick Ltd has been selected as the design and build contractor to deliver four depots, and the works will involve all aspects of the facility – from design and construction to training and maintenance.

Paul Lilley, Contracts Manager for VolkerFitzpatrick’s IEP West Coast Line, said: “I am proud to be heading up a scheme that has not only achieved the status of a National Skills Academy project but is regularly exceeding the KPIs set.

“It is regularly reported back to my colleagues and I that the client and the staff employed on these projects are getting as much benefit as the apprentices and work experience placements. Everybody has embraced the principles of the Skills Academy and I look forward to spreading the success and the values established, throughout all our future projects”.

Debbie Johnson, who heads up the National Skills Academy for Construction, said: “Our work with VolkerFitzpatrick and other construction employers provides opportunities to work with local partners and training providers to maximise employment and skills opportunities.

“When employers take clear ownership of the training and skills they need to boost productivity, and set out their stall by applying for National Skills Academy for Construction status, it helps other local skills and training partners to also achieve their goals.”
