All milestones on the contract have so far been achieved. This includes the recent completion of waste bunker works to enable the first part of the advance thermal treatment process to commence.

Work currently ongoing

The installation of much of the steel framework required on the Dickens Road site is ongoing. The roof and wall cladding of the mechanical treatment and advanced thermal treatment facilities is also nearing completion.

During March and April, a 1,000t mobile crane was used to install process plant will be on site. This will be followed by the installation of the remaining steelwork in May which must be built over the advanced thermal treatment facility.

The installation of mechanical and electrical services also started in March and will continue through to the commissioning of the site in October and November this year.

Next steps

The next stage of the development continues with the construction of the anaerobic digestion building and further installation of the state-of-the-art treatment technology, which will complete by December 2015.

Rigorous testing will then take place before the facility becomes fully operational in September 2016 and will treat around 125,000 tonnes of rubbish each year.

Milton Keynes Waste Recovery Park will utilise three state-of-the-art technologies – mechanical treatment, anaerobic digestion and advanced thermal treatment. Together, they will increase the amount of recyclable materials which are removed from the waste, in turn cutting the amount of rubbish sent to landfill to less than 5%.
