Joint venture partners VolkerFitzpatrick and HOCHTIEF, who were principal contractors on the scheme, won the Innovation Award and were highly commended in the Structures category of the ICE Awards.

Members of the East Kent Access Phase 2 project team received the award from ICE Senior Vice President Geoff French at a ceremony held at Leeds Castle on 7 June 2013.

The Awards recognise the best civil engineering projects across South East England, with the judges looking for projects that deliver a real benefit to society through the knowledge, skills and professional expertise of civil engineers.

Director of ICE South East England, John Laverty, said: "The opening of the East Kent Access Phase 2 was achieved five months ahead of programme and within budget. More than 2,500 construction workers were involved and over 1,250,000 man hours worked with no serious reported injuries or accidents.

"Our congratulations go to the project team involved in this scheme on winning the overall Innovation Award and being highly commended in the Structures category.

"ICE South East England's Engineering Excellence Awards aim to recognise the very best infrastructure projects in the region and we are pleased that this project has won this level of recognition.

"Having the right infrastructure is a key factor to generate economic success and publicly rewarding the people, organisations and businesses which deliver that infrastructure is important because of the benefits such civil engineering projects bring to the community."

The judges said:  "This is not a project for the faint-hearted! It contained many challenges and demands as well as engagement with the local community and its history, and significant structural challenges on a very large scale, some of which are at the forefront of innovation and development.

"The fact that this project faced some significant engineering challenges, especially the Cliffsend Underpass Jacked Box, and solved them without any significant interruptions to train services surely is something of which every member of the team should be proud."

Richard Offord, managing director of VolkerFitzpatrick, said: "The East Kent Access phase 2 project is an excellent example of best in practice engineering and a truly integrated project team.  I am pleased that the team has received this sort of recognition. "

John Jackson, managing director of HOCHTIEF (UK) Construction, said: "My congratulations to all on the project for working together to find those solutions which made this a memorable and exciting delivery experience. It is good to see their efforts being acknowledged."
